Taupo Grant Announcements

A lifeline for Turangi Artworks

A $2,000 BayTrust grant may not seem much in the scheme of things, but for Turangi Artworks Incorporated, it has come as a lifeline in a “very difficult year”.

Turangi Artworks President David Hawke says that earlier this year, the non-profit arts and crafts group faced a shortfall in funds. Its 66 members chipped in by paying an attendance charge each time they used the Society’s facilities and then a successful group exhibition also helped to consolidate its financial position.

“We were absolutely delighted to receive BayTrust’s grant this week. It has really helped us get back on our feet and given us the confidence to carry on and even look at doing some upgrading work on our 50-year-old premises,” Mr Hawke says.

Amongst other grants announced for Taupo community organisations earlier this week, $7,000 went towards Birthright Taupo Incorporated’s operating costs. Spokesperson Cara Law says the Society has been providing support services for single parents in Taupo for the past 33 years.

“We work with more than 50 families, providing information and referrals to other agencies; assisting with financial advice and funding and making home visits as required,” she says.

Birthright has an open-door policy so that anyone can drop in for a chat or social get-together and also runs weekly support groups offering crafts and activities. “We were getting low in funds, so it was great to get this generous grant to keep us going,” Ms Law adds.

Other Taupo area grants went to: Awhina Society Inc. ($3,000 towards foodbank activities); Mangakino Family Services Inc. ($2,000 towards foodbank activities); Taupo BMX Club Inc. ($5,500 towards a new starting gate, conditional upon the balance of the funds required being raised); Taupo Council of Social Services ($7,500 towards operating costs); The Salvation Army Foodbank ($500); and Turangi Foodbank ($3,000).
