Foodbanks Taupo
Christmas will surely be a much happier time for struggling families in the Taupo/Turangi region after four Foodbanks received special grants from BayTrust last week.
Trustees announced grants totaling $8,500 to the local Foodbanks to help buy food, groceries or assisting towards Foodbank activities at this busy time of year.
Discussions between Trust staff and the Foodbanks have revealed an increase of over 40% in the distribution of food parcels from last year.
The increase in demand is due mainly to the overall employment situation, but food price increases and more single people on lower incomes are important factors also.
Foodbanks receive referrals from Budget services, WINZ, Plunket, Women’s refuge and concerned friends, with demand always much higher at this time of year.
Megan George, coordinator of Taupo Food Bank said “We wish to put a first aid kit which includes Dettol, plasters and Savlon in each parcel. There are lots more issues with children health, including eczema, personal hygiene and bed sores. This is a new project for the 2012 year”.
Mangakino Foodbank Coordinator Lisa de Thierry said “We are seeing 50% repeat clients and 50% new people for different reasons. The parcels are now made up to last over a longer period of time”.
BayTrust Annual Foodbank grants total $53,300 this year, across the Bay of Plenty.
