WBoP Grant Announcement

Community service providers receive BayTrust grants

Western Bay of Plenty social service providers were the major beneficiaries in BayTrust’s latest grants round.

The largest single grant announced Thursday (March 25) was $15,458 to the St Peters Care and Counselling Charitable Trust to help meet the cost of rent, administration and staff supervision.  Care Co-ordinator Liz Garbutt says the Trust’s staff and many volunteer workers were “absolutely delighted” by the contribution.

“It’s quite humbling really.  We see it as an affirmation that we are meeting some very real community needs.  It’s great for all of the people involved to see that recognised through BayTrust’s continuing support,” she says.

St Peters Care & Counselling was established in 1988 and became a charitable trust last year.  It provides a range of free community services, including professional counselling; a one-on-one support service; advocacy for people have difficulty accessing the help they need from Government or other agencies; life skills educational programmes; foodbank referrals and emergency food help; the Take 2 4 U friendship group and mentoring service; a childcare service for mothers (of pre-school children) attending counselling or courses; and free Christmas dinners.

Other Western Bay of Plenty organisations to receive grants were: Age Concern (Tauranga) Inc. ($13,260 towards salary costs); Priority One – Western BoP Inc. ($10,000 towards Instep programme costs); Tauranga Amateur Swimming & Life Saving Club ( $475 towards trophy costs); The Salvation Army Tauranga ($6,720 towards administration, rent and life skills programme costs); and Voice Advocacy Trust ($10,000 towards operating and administration costs).

Meanwhile, four Baywide grants were also announced at the Tauranga function.  Coastguard Eastern Regions Association Inc. received $15,000 towards volunteer training; Deaf Aotearoa NZ Inc. BoP Branch received $8,347 towards administration and staff training costs; the Northern Regional Branch of Muscular Dystrophy Association of NZ received $9,973 towards fieldworker and office costs; and Parents Inc. received $10,000 towards resource programme costs.
