Department of Internal Affairs
Trust and Fellowship Grants
Individuals, community and welfare groups can apply for a range of funding. These trusts and fellowships are managed by the Department of Internal Affairs Local Government and Community Branch. The funding we manage or administer includes:
Trusts and fellowships
- Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust
- New Zealand Winston Churchill Memorial Trust - The Trust helps all kinds of New Zealander’s including community workers, engineers, business people, actors, teachers, artists etc to travel overseas and bring back with them new insights & understand that will enrich their community & NZ as a whole.
- Norman Kirk Memorial Trust - The Norman Kirk Memorial Trust seeks to promote the welfare and progress of the people of New Zealand and the South Pacific, especially those who have the capacity to benefit from further education, study or training, but who need financial assistance in realising their potential. The Trust does not consider direct applications from people or organisations. Funds for the promotion of amateur sporting teams or clubs who have been formally established and/or legally constituted. Projects funded:
- Sports teams associated with Primary, Intermediate and Secondary schools as well as other junior, amateur and non-professional players and teams.
- Specific Projects or purposes, or the running of community events.
- Problem gaming and anti drink initiatives
- Cultural pursuits
- Research, projects and equipment that improves the general health and well being of New Zealand communities. The results of any research are to be generally available for the public good.

First Sovereign Trust is licenced by the Dept. Internal Affairs to operate gaming machines in NZ. The money raised from the operation of gaming machines is distributed by way of grants under licence conditions as approved by the DIA.
The Halberg Trust honours sporting excellence & links people with a disability to sports active leisure.
The focus of the Trust is on building & supporting strong, inclusive & socially just communities. Focus is on health, social, developmental needs especially in the area’s of disadvantaged children & their families and Maori development.
Funding for Special Projects and Education up to $1500 with special project in view, rather than general expenses. Improved literacy, parenting, sex education and arts.

New Horizons for Women Trust Inc.
The New Horizons for Women Trust supports second-chance education & training, research on issues affecting women & initiatives that promote peace.
The Oticon Foundation aims to improve the lives of the hearing impaired through community and knowledge.
Oxford Charitable Sports Trust
The Oxford Charitable Sports club distributes funds within NZ for the promotion of amateur sport.
Pelorus Trust is a Charitable Trust based in Wellington raising funds for charitable, philanthropic & sporting purposes through the operation of gaming machines. Funds raised are generally returned to community groups or organizations from the areas located around the venues.
The strong community-focused philosophy of both The Lion Foundation and Perry Foundation will remain at the heart of the new entity. The combined funding areas of the two trusts will see a wide range of worthy community causes supported across the spectrum - including arts, culture, sports, education and health.
Poutama seeks to enhance sustainable economic development opportunities through investment in and support of Maori business innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Producers Trust was set up primarily to support amateur rugby and other sports in the areas it operates in. Producers Trust generates funds for its authorised purpose by operating gaming machines in the Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.
RMA Community Assistance Funds
The Ministry for the Environment’s Projects and Partnerships team administers a number of funds that are available to community groups, iwi and hapū, businesses and local government. The main funds give New Zealanders the opportunity to take part in practical action that provides local and national solutions to global environmental problems.
The Road Safety Trust is a Crown Established Trust that receives its funding from a share of the proceeds of personalised licence plate sales. Trustees appointed by the Minister of Transport control the money and make sure it is used as intended. The Trust is empowered to fund community safety initiatives, training, education, overseas travel, attendance at conferences and private sector technological developments beneficial to road safety.
Ron Greenwood Environmental Trust
To assist preservation and protection of the natural environment of New Zealand. Conservation, environment projects and activities funded. $300,000 available annually.
The Memorial Fund was established in 1987 on the accidental death of the prominent Wellington photographer, Ronald Woolf. He always took great interest in helping young people with their interest in photography. To help young people further their interest in photography as art. Grants up to $1000.
Rural Communities Trust
The Rural Communities Trust recognises that living in a rural community can mean facing barriers to education, health and other services.
Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Estate
Sir John Logan Campbell's Residuary Estate is held in Trust in perpetuity to distribute the income each year as directed by his Will. Generally charitable objects will fall into the categories of:
- Relief of Poverty
- Advancement of Education
- Other purposes beneficial to the Community
The overriding requirement for each of these categories is that the purpose is of "public benefit" and that any grants are for a sufficiently wide section of the community.

The Sutherland Self Help Trust provides grants to community organisations throughout New Zealand. Its current policy specifies the areas of interest for each year. Buildings & Equipment up to $50K.

Its aim is to help build a bright future for New Zealand's young people by supporting new initiatives in education that have the potential to positively impact on large numbers of young New Zealanders.
The Trust makes grants to projects and activities in the children & youth, cultural, sports & outdoors, educational and environmental areas with a focus on access, participation and inspiration. The majority of grants made by Sargood Bequest are under $5000. The Trustees favour projects to which funds are specifically targeted. From time to time the trust also makes larger grants or pledges over a number of years at the discretion of the trustees.
The Southern Trust is always open for applications to benefit the community. We do not have any cut off dates. In most cases, applications are processed within 20 working days. Requests larger than $30,000 are reviewed at the next available monthly Board of Trustees meeting.
The Tindall Foundation is a philanthropic family trust established in 1995 by Stephen and Margaret Tindall. Our guiding philosophy is to give a 'hand up' to New Zealanders in need. Families, social service, environment, third sector funding.
The Trusts Charitable Foundation (Inc.)
We are a National Charitable Trust distributing funds to the community of New Zealand from the proceeds of gaming machines operated in Licensing Trusts, private hotels, TABs and some sports clubs around NZ. The Foundation support a broad cross section of non-profit community groups, charities, welfare agencies and educational organisations as well as many amateur sporting clubs and the Racing Industry.
The Todd Foundation is a private family philanthropy based in Wellington New Zealand. We provide funding to organisations that contribute towards our vision of New Zealand Aotearoa as a place where "everyone is able to contribute to the best of their ability in a society that values and nurtures young people, encourages endeavour and recognises our cultural diversity".
The Trillian Trust was first licensed to operate gaming machines in 1999. Trilllian Trust is a boutique gaming machine operator, specialising in great service to both it's venue operators and the community. Trillian provides grants to many groups and organisations throughout the country, with a particular focus on children, youth and lifesaving.
UWNZ is committed to ensuring resources raised benefit the community from which they came i.e. raised locally to be given locally. Most donations to UWNZ are administered by the National Office and allocated regionally.
Water Safety Education Foundation
The Water Safety Education Foundation (WSEF) is a duly incorporated society that was established in 2002. The objective of WSEF is to proactively manage gaming machine operations as a means of generating revenue to fund water safety educational initiatives and community purposes.
Wayne Francis Charitable TrustThe Wayne Francis Charitable Trust is a philanthropic family organisation committed to making a positive, and lasting contribution to the community. While primarily focused on ensuring the young people of today grow into happy, confident adults, we support people who have a dream, accept the challenge of adversity, and strive to rise above it. One of our key funding areas is cancer research. This realm of medicine embodies some of the Trust’s fundamental objectives – prevention, long-term change, and actions that strive to benefit the lives of many.
